I was so encouraged by the turnout of youth and adults for the service project at William Joseph Crisis Nursery on Saturday. This growing organization provides emergency childcare and support for families in crisis—offering a safe, nurturing place for children when caregivers are overwhelmed by circumstances like illness, job loss, or other acute challenges. It is holy, heavy work, and it was meaningful for us to hear the story of this ministry and the care they provide. Our time there was spent organizing, building, and preparing the space for the families who will come through their doors. Volunteers set up a crib, sorted bag after bag of clothing by size, and assembled shelving units provided by the church thanks to your contributions to our youth mission work. By the end of the afternoon, the space really did feel transformed—more functional, more inviting, more ready to receive. Perhaps more significantly, a transformation began in us too. I was struck by the intergenerational spirit of the group—youth and adults working side by side and sharing a common purpose. There was a deep sense that this wasn’t just a one-time project, but the beginning of a relationship. Several people, especially our youth, expressed a desire to return, to keep showing up, and to continue supporting the ministry of the Crisis Nursery. To watch people’s hearts be stirred—to see a need, respond with compassion, and give of themselves—is a beautiful thing. It is, in many ways, the work of the church at its best. We left more aware, more connected, and more open to the needs of our neighbors. I’m so grateful for the work that was done in the Crisis Nursery—and in us.
