Whenever Dre Edwards passed a piano, he would stop to play. That was one of the first things Maria noticed when Dre came to True Colors CAMP (Creative Arts + Music Program). In the years since, he has nurtured that interest and developed his gift through piano lessons. It takes talent, skill, and discipline to play J.S. Bach’s Prelude in C with the confidence Dre shared in worship earlier this month. He has offered his music in several churches, courageously sharing his gift with others. And his musical ability extends beyond the piano. Dre is also a gifted saxophone player. As a rising eighth grader, he has already spent a year playing with the Western Hills Band. Now he hopes to learn the organ as well, and Dr. Bob has volunteered to teach him. This summer, Dre continues to grow and explore his gifts through Eastern Kentucky University band camp, while still making time for church camp, video games, and the everyday joys of being thirteen. Dre’s story is a reminder that God’s gifts can be sparked, recognized, and nurtured in simple, ordinary moments: a young person pausing at a piano, a mentor paying attention, a community making room for a gift to grow. As we celebrate Dre, we also give thanks for the people who notice, encourage, teach, and cheer others on. May we be a community that recognizes God’s gifts and helps them grow.
