Maria Bartholomew, Gina Williams, and I attended the Regional Assembly of the Christian Church (Disciples of Christ) in Kentucky this past weekend. We gathered around the theme, “POUR: Be filled. Pour out. Make disciples.” Drawing on Philippians 2:1–11, the theme invited us to be filled with the life of Christ and pour that life out in generous service: “Let the same mind be in you that was in Christ Jesus,” who “emptied himself” and humbled himself for others.

I can’t say I typically enjoy assembly business sessions, even when they are interesting. We hear reports from ministries across the Commonwealth, consider any formal resolutions submitted for possible adoption by the General Assembly, and appoint a new regional board of teachers, elders, ministers, and other leaders to serve the church. This year brought no contentious issues or pivotal “Sense of the Assembly” resolutions. Instead, I was surprisingly moved by the reports of the church. Again and again, we heard testimony of the Spirit being poured out—from new church starts to the faithful work of Lexington Theological Seminary and Midway University, and through many ministries connecting and equipping Kentucky Disciples.

Most importantly, we worshiped together. In prayer, proclamation, song, and communion, we heard anew the call to receive the Spirit, relish the experience of God, and pour that grace out for others. As Rev. Dr. LaMarco Cable preached, “The life of a church depends upon what is poured into it and, in turn, what it pours out.” So, I encourage you to reflect on this passage of Philippians: be filled with the love Christ pours into you, look “to the interests of others,” and pour out love and grace for others.

If, then, there is any comfort in Christ, any consolation from love, any partnership in the Spirit, any tender affection and sympathy, make my joy complete: be of the same mind, having the same love, being in full accord and of one mind. Do nothing from selfish ambition or empty conceit, but in humility regard others as better than yourselves. Let each of you look not to your own interests but to the interests of others.

Weekly Prayer: God, we praise you for the wonder of your creation and the gift of life. When we doubt the wonder of the life you have given us or we question our path, give us joy in your presence and help us to entrust our journey to you. In Jesus’ name we pray. Amen.

MEN’S LUNCH CHANGE IN VENUE

Please note that the Men’s Lunch will be meeting at Linney’s, 721 E. Main St., this Wednesday, September 30th at 11:30 am.  There will not be an agenda just plenty of good food and fun!   The Office Pub will be closed this Wednesday for vacation, and we will resume our weekly lunches there the following Wednesday, October 7th.  

DEACON’S MEETING

The Deacons will be meeting this Sunday, September 27th, in Fellowship Hall immediately after church. I hope all Deacons will be able to attend. Our children's ministry staff have offered to coordinate childcare for the meeting, so we would like to get a head count in order for us to have enough staff to safely care for everyone. HELP NEEDED

The Property Committee is asking for volunteers on Friday, October 9th, to help replace the light bulbs in the Sanctuary Lanterns. Some stained glass pieces on the Lanterns will also be replaced. If you can help, work is scheduled to begin at 9:00 AM. If you have any questions you can contact Mike Harrod or Dennis Hooker.
